Why can't cashbook be used to prevent fraud?

Generally speaking, any software that does not have an "audit trail" is insufficient for preventing fraud. Embezzlement is something that hits 1 in 4 companies, but goes unnoticed in most cases. An accounting software package with an audit trail (such as Visual Bookkeeper), will keep an un-alterable record of financial transactions. If a secretary decided to lower the total amount of an incoming check, and keep the difference for him/herself, the audit trail would show that they altered the check.
